Just The Gambia, just a volunteer project.
The minor trek is offered either in the villages around Barra on the North Bank or in and around the villages of Brikama, Sanyang and Kartong. We have our experienced Gambian guides living in the areas and your local community contacts.
South Gambia is south of the Tanji Bird Reserve and therefore shielded from the tourist zone. It is an area of natural green beauty either side of the new coastal road. There are good beaches for relaxation but few tourists no big hotels just the occasional eco lodges and guesthouses.
Barra is a hectic ferry town on the North Bank, across from Banjul. It has interesting small villages close by and its own beaches and national park.
This programme is a no frills package with no formal training, no holiday trek, just a useful local contact and a volunteer placement.
From the airport
Your guide will meet and greet at Banjul International Airport, transporting you by bush taxi to take you direct to your placement. Your placement is responsible for providing a basic room in a family compound (not shared) and a minimum of one local meal each day. There is a wide range of alternatives to keep you busy with responsible volunteering.
The programme is based on tourist season charter flights to Banjul which only operate from November to April. It is normally, therefore, only offered for 2, 3 or 4 months with no time for overlanding. We can add a small supplement of 150 pounds for flights which extend into the low season, May to October, to provide additional months for your project and for overlanding. (see Maxi Trek for further information on overlanding (backpacking) options)
It is a fine opportunity for a simple volunteer project, either alone or with a friend.
£1,400 until mid April - up to 4 months, direct to project placement.
